Day 10

Catania

The last stop on our tour was the second largest city on Sicily - a very local and working place that is a little grittier and less cosmopolitan than Palermo. Via Etnea, the primary street, caters to visitors, but venture off a few blocks and you see the real Catania. We walked through the local fish mongers’ market with vendors shouting above one another to get shoppers attention, looked at the grand architecture around the Piazza del Duomo with the elephant fountain in the middle, and walked up Via Etnea. We visited the Museum of the WWII 1943 Landings in Sicily (Museo dello Sbarco), a very good and worthwhile stop for a few hours. Visitors pass through a diorama of a Sicilian town and sit in a “bomb shelter” while sounds and vibrations echo the real thing. Then there are extensive exhibits about all the nations involved: Germans, Italians, Americans, British, Canadian, and others.
