Day 9

Taormina

A surge in popularity thanks to the television series “White Lotus” has brought tourists en masse to this town. A local guide took us on a tour, stopping to see the courtyard of the luxurious resort hotel where the TV show was filmed. We walked through the Parco duca di Cesaro, a public park offering a quiet break from the busy village streets with beautiful views over the bay and Mount Etna in the distance. The park was created by a Scottish woman who was rumored to have been sent to Sicily in the late 1800s by Queen Victoria after a scandal involving the queen’s son. The ruins of her home remain in the park, along with a WWII memorial and various exotic plants. The next stop was the ancient Greek theater built in the third century BC that is still used today for open-air performances. On our own again after the walking tour, many of us rode the cable car down to the water to find the beach. The water felt good after a hot day walking around, but the rocky shore was tricky to navigate, to say the least!
