Day 6

Forgotten Roman mosaics and Syracuse

Tucked into an inland canyon about an hour away from Agrigento is another UNESCO-listed site, the Villa Romana del Casale. This 4th century Roman villa boasts the world's largest and best-preserved collection of mosaics. Buried under landslides and frequent flooding and forgotten in the 17th and 18th centuries, it was rediscovered in the early 1800s. Excavations and restorations continue to this day. Our next stop was a visit to a working farm agritourismo run by a mother/daughter team. We enjoyed a Sicilian barbecue, complete with tables set up in the barn!  We finished the day with an evening walk through Syracuse's historic old town on the island of Ortygia and dinner along the waterside promenade.
